TREATMENT OPTIONS - EndoVenous Laser Treatment
New Technology
E.V.L.T. (EndoVenous Laser Treatment)
Although modern surgery for Varicose veins is still the gold standard, with lovely cosmetic results and immediate walking, it is still an operation and an anaesthetic.
Most people would prefer to avoid an operation if possible. Ultrasound guided injection treatment does have a recurrence rate, and most patients find the 2 week day and night stocking very uncomfortable. Especially in summer!
EVLT is a minimally invasive ultrasound guided laser treatment that is performed under local anaesthetic.
Patients can go back to work the next day, with no stockings, and can therefore shower.
| The technique involves placing a 600micron laser catheter into the vein, and guiding it up to the origin of the vein, under ultrasound guidance. The laser is activated, and 60 seconds later the vein is obliterated. The entire vein is destroyed, which is an advantage over injections, where only the lining of the vein is damaged (hence the compression stockings to help "glue" it shut.) |
 |
Although a relatively new treatment, results show a 98% success rate, and so far no recurrences after the 1st year. Most patients will need one more visit for some simple sclerotherapy for the veins remote from the treated veins. Complications are extremely low. Cosmetics are excellent.
