DIAGNOSES/ INVESTIGATIONS
Ultrasound :: Air Plethysmography
:: Blood Test
WHY ARE INVESTIGATIONS NEEDED
Not surprisingly, people do vary in their anatomy. Knowing that unusual anatomy is present before treatment may influence the choice in treatment. It is an obvious advantage for a surgeon, so that the incisions can be placed accurately, and knowing what to expect can keep the operating time to a minimum. The complication rate rises with longer anaesthetics. Theatre and anaesthetists fees are also time related, so anything that lessens operative time is safer and reduces expenses. Modern investigations are non-invasive, i.e. nothing is injected or placed into the body.
WHAT DO INVESTIGATIONS ENTAIL?
Ultrasound
A hand held miniature unit can determine which of the two systems under the skin is involved, and where the problem originates. By using sound waves and the Doppler effect, a doctor can tell whether a vein hidden deep within the tissues and not visible, has normal flow or whether it is varicose.
A Duplex Ultrasound is a more advanced machine that creates a picture and may use colour to tell whether a vein is refluxing. It also uses sound waves, but creates an image of the anatomy of the leg, together with details about the flow of blood and sizes. These machines are invaluable and essential in modern management of varicose veins.
